Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about custom laser engraved metal

Ordering Process

How does the ordering process work?

Our ordering process is simple and streamlined:

  1. Choose Your Product - Select from metal cards, charms, or luggage tags
  2. Design in Studio - Upload your artwork, photos, or graphics using our design studio
  3. Preview & Order - Review your design and place your order
  4. We Engrave - Your design is precision laser engraved onto premium metal
  5. Ship to You - We package and ship your custom pieces within 3-5 business days
Do I need an account to order?

Yes, creating a free account allows us to save your designs as drafts, track your orders, and provide better customer support. Your account also stores your shipping addresses for faster checkout.

Can I save my design and come back later?

Absolutely! All designs are automatically saved as drafts to your account. You can revisit, modify, and finalize them whenever you're ready to order.

Can I order a sample before placing a larger order?

Yes — and we recommend it! There are no order minimums, so you can order a single item to check the engraving quality, material, and finish in person before committing to a bigger order. Single items start at just a few dollars.

Because every item is custom-engraved and can't be returned, a single-item test order is the best way to make sure you love the result. See our Shipping & Returns policy for details.

Design Guidelines

How should I prepare my artwork?

For best results:

  • High Resolution: Use images at least 300 DPI or 1000x1000 pixels
  • High Contrast: Clear, bold designs engrave better than subtle gradients
  • File Formats: JPG, PNG, or SVG files work great
  • Keep It Simple: Avoid tiny text or intricate details smaller than 2mm
Pro Tip: Black and white designs with strong contrast produce the sharpest engravings.
What is the outline stroke technique?

When engraving certain designs, simply inverting the image colors isn't always enough to get proper positive/negative space reversal. We use an outline stroke technique to ensure the laser engraves the correct areas.

Why it's needed: An outline stroke around your design forces proper reversal of positive and negative space. Without it, the laser may not correctly interpret which areas should be engraved vs. left untouched.

How it works:

  • You design normally: Create your artwork in black on a white or transparent background
  • We add an outline stroke: A border is added around your design shape in the template file
  • The outline ensures correct reversal: This forces the laser to properly interpret positive/negative space
  • Result: Black areas remain the metal's original color (unengraved), white areas become engraved (frosted/white)

See our charm template example (charm-template-kpopswag.svg) — it shows "No Outline" vs "With Outline" to demonstrate how the outline stroke affects the final engraving.

Best for: Designs where proper positive/negative space is critical — logos, icons, text, and shapes that need precise area definition

Can I use photographs?

Absolutely! Photographs create stunning engravings when they have good contrast and clear subjects. We use two specialized techniques to convert your photos for laser engraving:

  • Halftone Dithering: Creates realistic photo engravings using tiny dot patterns (like newspaper photos) - perfect for portraits and detailed images
  • Variable Power Grayscale: Uses varying laser intensity to create smooth tonal gradients and subtle shading - ideal for artistic photos and landscapes

The result is a permanent, detailed photograph etched directly into the metal surface.

Tips for best photo results:

  • High Resolution: Use images at least 1500×1500 pixels or 300 DPI minimum
  • Strong Contrast: Choose photos with clear lighting and well-defined subjects
  • Avoid: Overly dark, washed-out, or low-contrast images
  • Best subjects: Portraits with clear facial features, high-contrast landscapes, pets with distinctive markings
What file formats do you accept?

For grayscale photo engravings:

  • JPG/JPEG - Ideal for photographs, use 300 DPI or higher resolution
  • PNG - Great for photos with transparency or logos

For high-contrast designs (logos, text, graphics):

  • Vector files (preferred): AI, EPS, PDF, SVG
  • 1-color black vector designs produce the cleanest, sharpest results
  • Scales perfectly to any size without losing quality
SVG Export Tip (Adobe Illustrator):
When exporting SVG files, ensure they have an exact size embedded:

1. Go to File → Export → Export As...
2. Choose SVG format
3. In the SVG Options dialog, click "More Options"
4. Under Advanced Options, set:
   • CSS Properties: Presentation Attributes
   • Check "Responsive" to OFF (uncheck it)
   • Ensure Width and Height are set to actual dimensions
5. This embeds the exact size (e.g., 85mm × 54mm) into the SVG file

General guidelines:

  • Photos: 300 DPI minimum, higher is better
  • Logos/Graphics: Vector format (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) strongly preferred
  • Maximum file size: 5MB per file

Laser Engraving on Metal

How does laser engraving work on metal?

Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to remove or alter the surface of the metal. The laser vaporizes a thin layer of the coating or material, creating a permanent mark that reveals the underlying metal color.

The result: A frosted white or silver appearance where the laser has marked, creating beautiful contrast against the colored metal finish.

Why does black artwork engrave as white?

This is how laser engraving works on anodized or coated metal:

  • Black areas in your design = Laser engraves here (removes coating, appears white/frosted)
  • White areas in your design = Laser skips here (metal stays original color)
Color Inversion: If your design has a black logo on white background, the final engraving will show a white logo on colored metal. We handle this conversion automatically for sticker-style designs!
Is the engraving permanent?

Yes! Laser engraving is permanent and won't fade, peel, or wear off. The laser physically removes material, so the marking is as durable as the metal itself. Your custom piece will last for years with normal use.

Can you engrave in color?

Yes! We can create color engravings on select materials like stainless steel and titanium using an advanced MOPA fiber laser. This process creates iridescent, rainbow-like colors through light refraction — similar to how oil on water creates colors.

Important: These are not painted or printed colors. The laser alters the metal surface at a microscopic level, creating an oxide layer that refracts light into different colors. The colors are permanent and won't fade, but they're more subtle and iridescent rather than solid, flat colors like a printed image.

Color engraving creates:

  • Shimmering blues, purples, golds, and greens
  • Rainbow gradient effects
  • Unique metallic patinas

For standard products (aluminum): These create single-color marks (white/frosted on colored metal). You can achieve visual variety by choosing different metal finishes or using negative space in your design.

Note: Color engraving is a specialized process that requires precise laser control and is more time-consuming than standard engraving. It incurs an additional charge and is available by custom quote only.
